scubatanks evenWas at WCP and saw a group of fishermen sharing an amazing catch... they had an assortment of fish and about 10 huge cuttlefish (rugby ball sized). They must have caught about 100 fish.<br /><br />Wasn't able to sneak pics of the fish but they had lots of colourful fish like the copper banded butterfly fish(who would eat this?), and large coral angelfish...in bright yellows and blues. (see link : <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_angelfish_group">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_angelfish_group). </a><br /><br />They has so many fish that some were thrown back into the water. A Quick estimate : about 20 nets (at least) within a 50m stretch of intertidal. Bear in mind that most of these nets are themselves over 25metres long...some over 50 metres! All curled up and stuck in the mud, mangrove tree roots etc. Some of the nets already have thriving colonisers and we therefore leave them as is...so as not to disrupt the dependant organisms.<br /><br />Abandoned nets continue to trap and kill indiscriminately reducing the biodiversity of the area. Commercially valuable species such as the Horseshoe crab frequently find themselves caught and soon starve to death. In other parts of the world, such nets have caused the deaths of larger animals such as dugongs. See <a href="http://teamseagrass.blogspot.com/2007/12/dugong-drowned-in-gill-nets.html">http://teamseagrass.blogspot.com/2007/12/dugong-drowned-in-gill-nets.html</a><br /><br />Short clip of some of the team doing their best early in the clean-up...before the mud, and slime, and other stuff got to us. One of the group even forgot to bring a change of clothes...he brought back some of the mud with him. Things got a bit too much muddy with mud flying all over (we all had some fly into our mouths! - bleah). <span style="color: rgb(255, 204, 51);">Point to note</span> : <span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 102);">Keep mouth shut when messing about with abandoned nets! </span><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyNhNvjjD2fEeiLgUowZGibUVzCM3L7towV5IsCr9GFjTHQtJexvoxerX2OOWoonjm3W6lf2vp-cP7BfpGOFg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br />In the meantime, Sekudu had some unscheduled visitors...<br />...there were some chaps who decided to fish in the *Chek Jawa Wetlands area ...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq9WemAerrVQkvulhyyIAdLTQ9lNB3GoXsseuaZC9bVVNV2Keb-yB34JcYfNhRJL_fL47NHRHq-uLn6oey6e6WbdndzSlgEXZ2s6SwUE10_lNskPQa1EWPWp9pWbRx-knx_x9v06Ix4hBY/s1600-h/Sekudu06Jan2008_10.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq9WemAerrVQkvulhyyIAdLTQ9lNB3GoXsseuaZC9bVVNV2Keb-yB34JcYfNhRJL_fL47NHRHq-uLn6oey6e6WbdndzSlgEXZ2s6SwUE10_lNskPQa1EWPWp9pWbRx-knx_x9v06Ix4hBY/s400/Sekudu06Jan2008_10.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152714254954963266" border="0" /></a><br />SZ18514H<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiW203gu7rOxKSe9tsX1FuCCtokVyy8A8lIy5raNVMTzO2vEqCxMRUlUFJBOSonfh4mgGMCzCvchCrwcHqvINNamLAfkFui5D0Ijxhzsv4FQEOO1qUZ_aBptYxMSJ61_XputzBu4Do6EER/s1600-h/Sekudu06Jan2008_03.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiW203gu7rOxKSe9tsX1FuCCtokVyy8A8lIy5raNVMTzO2vEqCxMRUlUFJBOSonfh4mgGMCzCvchCrwcHqvINNamLAfkFui5D0Ijxhzsv4FQEOO1qUZ_aBptYxMSJ61_XputzBu4Do6EER/s400/Sekudu06Jan2008_03.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152714259249930578" border="0" /></a><br /><br />... and also some canoeists and sailors ...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-PUrhDS10A7JyNuqFCNxXpIRHfrAfOwHGskptgQAG6Po7pMYSqQ_a1FII3cv0qyoySt16g0DrLPSUa5NPjf1sghvGk1EhJg21NJkFHFU8YEtBOC8cL6LwA-ZNwXd0baIoK92-sC50sbuf/s1600-h/canoe1.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-PUrhDS10A7JyNuqFCNxXpIRHfrAfOwHGskptgQAG6Po7pMYSqQ_a1FII3cv0qyoySt16g0DrLPSUa5NPjf1sghvGk1EhJg21NJkFHFU8YEtBOC8cL6LwA-ZNwXd0baIoK92-sC50sbuf/s400/canoe1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152714263544897890" border="0" /></a><br /><br />... One dived headlong into the water and whilst the other hesitated before running into the waves.<br /><br />Strangely, the one which dived headlong <span>decided that it did not like the water after all and</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> crawled </span>it's way back up to the beach.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDDqqONeoHZSwEovUF_wOfG92gUo10kfPPRNn9h2kaMmWfr-ZNLRprzhIPyyL7Sx8YxxiiM1QhGfTFsthDxkR56Js3WoMIi_b1nfpB-VaxgCHqhZK-93lDsKeq5tqqLxicJHSQJxDwmjjH/s1600-h/30Dec07Labrador_09.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDDqqONeoHZSwEovUF_wOfG92gUo10kfPPRNn9h2kaMmWfr-ZNLRprzhIPyyL7Sx8YxxiiM1QhGfTFsthDxkR56Js3WoMIi_b1nfpB-VaxgCHqhZK-93lDsKeq5tqqLxicJHSQJxDwmjjH/s400/30Dec07Labrador_09.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5149781389292249362" border="0" /></a><br />(spot the turtle...where is it?)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmoDTjkrcB15ZPmRTER2CIB8uGrfydPTkfc0yhNjPyaHPBZTh-xYck5AJLMbP2zQo95Mf_e5GoDqzEXlcZ-uvMlsPMSlNY9yQlT-0SUo1ku4HHURt9PNU6UcejlM-GpxhBYozyvrsEWDsI/s1600-h/turtle+closeup.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmoDTjkrcB15ZPmRTER2CIB8uGrfydPTkfc0yhNjPyaHPBZTh-xYck5AJLMbP2zQo95Mf_e5GoDqzEXlcZ-uvMlsPMSlNY9yQlT-0SUo1ku4HHURt9PNU6UcejlM-GpxhBYozyvrsEWDsI/s400/turtle+closeup.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150123522092081442" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br />It headed for the shadows of the overhead walkway. The couple got up to leave and then I asked them if the turtles were sea turtles....to wit they said 'yes'. I replied that sea turtles do not walk but haul themselves around on 'flippers'. Most likely what they released were fresh-water turtles.<br /><br />I then asked where they had bought the 'sea turtles'...and they said 'Chinatown market'.<br />A short explanation was offered about why the turtles being released (for prayer purposes) at a beach was not a good idea...as they would most surely die in such saline conditions given that they were not sea turtles.<br /><br />And why buy and release turtles anyway? 'Traditionally, it's for good luck.' was the answer. <span style="font-style: italic;"><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 204, 0);font-size:85%;" ><span style="color: rgb(102, 255, 255);">I can't imagine good luck being derived from releasing non-native animals to an ecosystem to which they are not suited to. The only good luck was that accruing to the person who sold the turtles and the monitor lizard or fish which was going to eat the turtles </span></span></span><br /><br />The chap was keen to listen and agreed to rescue the released animals...After much looking around, he did locate one of the turtles. He bagged it and climbed back out. On closer view, it was a greenish clawed turtle with distinctive legs (not flippers) and a slightly long neck. Definitely not a sea-turtle with flippers.<br /><br />The couple headed off to West Coast Park's Marsh Garden to release the re-captured turtle. At least Marsh Garden was brackish and not as saline as the open sea at Labrador Beach. Hopefully, they re-consider this practice and give it up without buying another turtle to bring them good luck.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-17529563746003256172007-12-29T07:18:00.000-08:002007-12-29T07:22:03.029-08:00Ghost Traps - carry on trapping and killing : (<h1 style="color: rgb(255, 102, 102);"><span style="font-size:180%;">"Ghost" traps on reefs are killing machines</span></h1>Link here :<br /><a href="http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071229/SPORTS06/712290454/1002/SPORTS">http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071229/SPORTS06/712290454/1002/SPORTS</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-8464682086712561902007-12-28T06:50:00.000-08:002007-12-30T05:23:27.289-08:00Legislation which may be applicable to the dumping at Labrador's intertidal zone.<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="color: rgb(51, 102, 255);font-size:15;" >PARKS & TREES ACT<br /></span></b><span style="color: rgb(102, 255, 255);">Restricted activities in respect of trees, plants, etc., in national parks and nature reserves</span><br />8. —(1) <b><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">No person shall</span></b>, except with the approval of the Commissioner granted under section 12 and in accordance with the terms and conditions of<br />such approval, carry out any of the following activities within any national park or nature reserve:<br />(a) cut, collect or displace any tree or plant or any part thereof;<br />(b) affix, set up or erect any sign, shrine, altar, religious object, shelter, structure or building;<br />(c) clear, break up, dig or cultivate any land;<br />(d) use or occupy any building, vehicle, boat or other property of the Board; Commonly used by local marine craft as a cheap and effective bumper, these are frequently cut away or thrown overboard by boatowners/operators just so that they do now have to dispose of them on their own. The Remora was caught by rod much like the sign on the railing.<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwtXRngpOUcU0cPb44dthUAqH2FaVqmUGiCPx__zbKe82J_NJu9jZnreIybVx6WgyjGA70amLvLz2Ml02KtKA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br />The video was shot at the Tanjung Berlayar lookout pier opposite Keppel Club.<br />As the sign shows, this is a no-fishing zone. Or rather 'was' since no one was paying any attention to the sign. At least the old chap who caught the remora threw it back into the water.<br /><br />Perhaps this whole section of Labrador Park should be 'a no-fishing-zone'. i.e the part from the lookout pier to the mangrove channel (Berlayar Creek)<br />A recent cleanup saw many fishing lines with hooks caught on rocks (not to mention many other foreign objects - most probably left behind during the construction of the park extension and pier.)<br /><br />There was a new species of eel found today as well. This species lives on trees and resembles sun-dried seafood. ... someone had caught an eel and tied it to the tree with some fishing line.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiAsbz6vcjchlGK1gtxj-3-MYLBmiNMQkNBZRlxRzHzp9K_VeVuU35WqushPJ6YUrz7ztVr1Yrra0l28jh-uOEdH3i-QPXWLJdbOvbzx6EJiosJj_PSXT3gZB7OPm9O-YW3WyOe8VtXHUh/s1600-h/IMGA0368.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiAsbz6vcjchlGK1gtxj-3-MYLBmiNMQkNBZRlxRzHzp9K_VeVuU35WqushPJ6YUrz7ztVr1Yrra0l28jh-uOEdH3i-QPXWLJdbOvbzx6EJiosJj_PSXT3gZB7OPm9O-YW3WyOe8VtXHUh/s400/IMGA0368.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144601469754711618" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dy6UTEcwvvxqtv-abyHqzAtMuHgPRwSQHjC4_ctvF6xalKZiJXQRaER8NP2M4MmjpP5on_XdhLuXti_l8lPfQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />What a senseless waste of a living organism! ....the fisherman could have just thrown it back into the water if he did not want the eel.<br /><br />Perhaps NParks could come up with a list of Dos and Don'ts for fishermen to follow...and there could also be more frequent friendly ranger patrols to educate the fishermen on the finer points of conserving the entire ecosystem and all the animals which play a part in the food chain.<br /><br />*some links on the Remora :-<br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remora">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remora</a><br /><a href="http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Remora_remora.html">http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Remora_remora.html</a><br /><a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Remora.jpg">http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Remora.jpg</a><br /><a href="http://www.geocities.com/museumcataloging/remora.html">http://www.geocities.com/museumcataloging/remora.html</a><br /><a href="http://www.oceanlight.com/html/remora_sp.html">http://www.oceanlight.com/html/remora_sp.html</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-87395106403914427782007-11-25T05:42:00.000-08:002007-12-16T07:44:48.155-08:00Labrador Mangrove/Berlayar Creek Bay 25Nov2007<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGRyNDolyRNmrR1dO8GToxBH2KGSNkwzV_Nw3oh4w6WoAdEHaNZZNb7EU78DtMu7H2qdox1r5bkemnJOyHyfZFSOYJX7icroRtdYuSmfb4Jw8T8OmmTBBPub3CQXfnjJjwmElbah9L3aSt/s1600-h/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_19.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGRyNDolyRNmrR1dO8GToxBH2KGSNkwzV_Nw3oh4w6WoAdEHaNZZNb7EU78DtMu7H2qdox1r5bkemnJOyHyfZFSOYJX7icroRtdYuSmfb4Jw8T8OmmTBBPub3CQXfnjJjwmElbah9L3aSt/s400/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_19.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144591711589014706" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p7oYORhH7ZQ/R0l9h16e3qI/AAAAAAAAAJA/URbxZt6yu-0/s1600-h/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_11.jpg"></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p7oYORhH7ZQ/R1QRSwIf09I/AAAAAAAAAOQ/m8lFufO7GBg/s1600-R/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_19.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p7oYORhH7ZQ/R1QRSwIf09I/AAAAAAAAAOQ/K-CkcNGeiJs/s400/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_19.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139752088592438226" border="0" /></a><br />Facing Pulau Keppel. Very few organisms would have escaped the tangling grasp of the nets. Once collapsed, no crawling animal would be able to escape it. The unfortunate thing about the meganet was that it started close to the channel leading into the mangrove. This effectively would catch everything trying to make way into the mangrove.<br /><br />During the course of the day, we would see 6 separate discarded gill nets and two dead horseshoe crabs.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh65vBP5ceVZIrS8R73gpceTA3Uo607Ds1WYJW3l4UPhTgAsqc2K_lUqxV2srWx1FTzWZJXGzqQd2-eMJfCzpotKvS_Stxq18C7Kkx7GqFONLGH0UPbpDubslbquo0lb4G1qOA6dhTO-W5E/s1600-h/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_34.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh65vBP5ceVZIrS8R73gpceTA3Uo607Ds1WYJW3l4UPhTgAsqc2K_lUqxV2srWx1FTzWZJXGzqQd2-eMJfCzpotKvS_Stxq18C7Kkx7GqFONLGH0UPbpDubslbquo0lb4G1qOA6dhTO-W5E/s400/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_34.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144596771060489778" border="0" /></a><br /><br />*Tachypleus Gigas, Horseshoe crabs are not crabs but are more closely related to spiders and scorpions. Why does Berlayar have so little? Could this be a seasonal occurrence or could there be some residual form of pollution making life difficult? With so much junk on our shores and so many threats, there is a slim chance that Berlayar Creek will regain it's old splendour. But we can do as much as we can to ensure that it does. We have to care about our last remaining shores and mangroves and hope that whatever the rich biodiversity returns.<br /><br />Members of the public appreciating the wonderful sightings.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo1HZia0B4xkbkBOV_y0DkOaup4gfFqG3dzPGaZRBIi2kW3Oldzq81hE9YqnEH0j-A0CWN5Sdzvel0Qpj2ltS9mjchhp9f031_BiGjhoLLQfZLEK4sSkTN2vydwQ2chhdjemFItWqayWmB/s1600-h/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_24.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo1HZia0B4xkbkBOV_y0DkOaup4gfFqG3dzPGaZRBIi2kW3Oldzq81hE9YqnEH0j-A0CWN5Sdzvel0Qpj2ltS9mjchhp9f031_BiGjhoLLQfZLEK4sSkTN2vydwQ2chhdjemFItWqayWmB/s400/25Nov07LabradorMangrove_24.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144595439620627938" border="0" /></a><br /><br />At least there are some birds who have the ability to find better feeding grounds but monitor the background as well..or you'll just miss monitoring the monitor!<br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dw8QeTyZ__1VZoQA1mVbvv8B_GvpaEBXuDHgHH3MKPvEnGmwlNaja6jvbnE54f9xr9OUFYa1OQ4cUweJdFkaw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br />other blogs on the same trip :-<br /><a href="http://ashira.blogspot.com/2007/11/mucking-around-berlayar-creek.html">http://ashira.blogspot.com/2007/11/mucking-around-berlayar-creek.html</a><br /><a href="http://wherediscoverybegins.blogspot.com/2007/11/discovery-labrador-mangroves-on-25-nov.html">http://wherediscoverybegins.blogspot.com/2007/11/discovery-labrador-mangroves-on-25-nov.html<br /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-81884767763334506722007-11-12T06:21:00.000-08:002007-12-03T08:24:48.860-08:00Labrador Mangrove/Berlayar Creek BayManaged to get the boss to let me use a little hard-earned off-time to rush off to Labrador Park today. The tidetable showed a 0.3m tide at about 6.15pm. Same as the day before when RT and SK were checking out reef building materials 'thoughtfully' left behind by the SP Project Team at the pier end of Labrador.<br /><br />First thing I noticed when I got to the newly opened park extension (towards Keppel Club) was that there was someone (in green shirt) else who beat me to the mudflat...only she was on the Club side in sneakers trying to get closer to the sticky chewy part of the mud. She turned back after a few brave and cautious steps...i guess realising that she would soon loose her sneakers to the mud if she persisted. Eventually, she made her way back to the safety of the Club path. It looked like she was looking to do some exploring on her own and she had some paper with her as if she was taking notes.<br /><br />The first thing you see after you get down the rock face opposite the Club is a green bundle. Looked like a bush of sorts but only much more dangerous than a regular bush. It was a thoughtlessly discarded bundle of barbed wire which had collected seaweed.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIhLUn5tqhRbwUkev6rXxmY0u-tojxmirPc3RgZCe7Aet_faUrObFaal77i1LvpKpd-OTK-YxfdpZ5HqXLOGK7NjqJREej7KS2vPBZBBIyIOi09yGMQGyuoafQz2zuwH4y_VqZCJQ_o8ff/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_01BarbedWire.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIhLUn5tqhRbwUkev6rXxmY0u-tojxmirPc3RgZCe7Aet_faUrObFaal77i1LvpKpd-OTK-YxfdpZ5HqXLOGK7NjqJREej7KS2vPBZBBIyIOi09yGMQGyuoafQz2zuwH4y_VqZCJQ_o8ff/s400/LabradorMangrove_01BarbedWire.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131963021250087858" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp0hqk6GSbnih7ntmJczfJyqeymiPTCY28hEIZaBsWDXknQnc6MKO8QWy1EzWYzxmfqnDYwEoTIDsaHxs5BihC0vaFwu7i9t8AnBTXaIa8c5HsaNDO6oPT8NtpL9xq1ecYzvtwPMtkXWCS/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_02BarbedWire.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp0hqk6GSbnih7ntmJczfJyqeymiPTCY28hEIZaBsWDXknQnc6MKO8QWy1EzWYzxmfqnDYwEoTIDsaHxs5BihC0vaFwu7i9t8AnBTXaIa8c5HsaNDO6oPT8NtpL9xq1ecYzvtwPMtkXWCS/s400/LabradorMangrove_02BarbedWire.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131963115739368386" border="0" /></a><br /><br />There was quite a fair bit of rubbish all along the estuary mouth.<br /><br />There were quite a few abandoned rubber tires(which will take a very long time to disintergrate)<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK0RKl_lBG5cTM11g2kMStDjU-1nQ7Nsf5WwV6Z_k8mmwFdWivnHjTRhZKS3ZHwGaXO5AqqV4MGqySagNrof_aDJocwxQU_4oorUWWGn-t3WHQ3qKdIS5I1nGubH_96rN039Wyl3fQjM7I/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_09Tire.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK0RKl_lBG5cTM11g2kMStDjU-1nQ7Nsf5WwV6Z_k8mmwFdWivnHjTRhZKS3ZHwGaXO5AqqV4MGqySagNrof_aDJocwxQU_4oorUWWGn-t3WHQ3qKdIS5I1nGubH_96rN039Wyl3fQjM7I/s400/LabradorMangrove_09Tire.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131963906013350882" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHSuJRekBWel8xlnWZAoEMr7761QZtxlyGDZadX6xRENv4ZqEvQ2H2oPEh-hYG06ALLJIKcjPMRGmaYmMhCcZEQngTQhDKVusTnLNafl4v1-zHtgEY71CI9ruF1eAV2CKORgxPym2TyhPC/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_08Tire.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHSuJRekBWel8xlnWZAoEMr7761QZtxlyGDZadX6xRENv4ZqEvQ2H2oPEh-hYG06ALLJIKcjPMRGmaYmMhCcZEQngTQhDKVusTnLNafl4v1-zHtgEY71CI9ruF1eAV2CKORgxPym2TyhPC/s400/LabradorMangrove_08Tire.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131963802934135762" border="0" /></a><br /><br />As usual, no coastal habitat would be complete without plastic...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZX4wn5431bWvcSTYGTr2JXWtI11xMVgvui9AkEA1a3TUli52ohgPlq33gC1xSWssTugiOi3U-ehGOkGFJULTk9MAS2blmB44ot_DArjEvsmL4xIyt783UqCvlkowvYNIvgQMcJ48XJy_/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_04RedPlastic.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZX4wn5431bWvcSTYGTr2JXWtI11xMVgvui9AkEA1a3TUli52ohgPlq33gC1xSWssTugiOi3U-ehGOkGFJULTk9MAS2blmB44ot_DArjEvsmL4xIyt783UqCvlkowvYNIvgQMcJ48XJy_/s400/LabradorMangrove_04RedPlastic.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131964511603739634" border="0" /></a><br /><br />and even plastic high on the trees...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTAJ8LS7jl4WChxw06YBCN6xpcOOOd9vpxXGYjwFbLa4yLLDDKPIHgf3ia1yogxk-X7B5rJlYvOoBeh8s78pkzEhOVDwUK7hUf6OZJGjlwWIrQukrQJ0SHp7ZJTOUXzSD3jT0SOh6C_3Nr/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_05High+Plastic.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTAJ8LS7jl4WChxw06YBCN6xpcOOOd9vpxXGYjwFbLa4yLLDDKPIHgf3ia1yogxk-X7B5rJlYvOoBeh8s78pkzEhOVDwUK7hUf6OZJGjlwWIrQukrQJ0SHp7ZJTOUXzSD3jT0SOh6C_3Nr/s400/LabradorMangrove_05High+Plastic.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131964631862823938" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The Keppel Club has a golf course which runs parallel to the back mangrove. Needs more exploring. Despite having not very clear water, Singapore does have amazing variety of coral.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">The MOTHER of all abandoned gill nets:</span><br />At first I thought there was just one abandoned gill net sprawled on the muddy-sand. But later managed to locate at least three such nets with the last one stretching all the way from the Club side and onto the Labrador Park side. This is the <span style="font-weight: bold;">mother</span> of all abandoned gill nets and the total length could be more than 50m.<br /><br />Abandoned gill nets still keep trapping organisms like crabs which get entangled and drown or starve eventually. There are such abandoned nets all over Singapore and including at some protected areas like Sekudu and Chek Jawa and at other areas rich in marine biodiversity like Semakau, Changi and Kranji( just to name a few places). Horseshoe crabs are commonly found stuck and very dead although the Beachfleas did manage to save some on Sentosa some time ago.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv8NAhwd3wbYVOKPeB53j2NMjvAnjfaOweh8HvlI6J1441nY57w6R2weZtJ7Gs1SFw04GIlLhlYXB8PQaa5_ZfhNQ8s88CWN2kUZXh54BKPfZdIcZmygxsxiWnouORaA_HGSAIppgDTlBj/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_18Net.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv8NAhwd3wbYVOKPeB53j2NMjvAnjfaOweh8HvlI6J1441nY57w6R2weZtJ7Gs1SFw04GIlLhlYXB8PQaa5_ZfhNQ8s88CWN2kUZXh54BKPfZdIcZmygxsxiWnouORaA_HGSAIppgDTlBj/s400/LabradorMangrove_18Net.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131969768643710050" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhim9YhUYarRUbeZnEdsCgP1YzPGLZ3g8SXEbfV2YA7x8CEj7txnq8_vBUjSfMg8ER-se8Ry2mmaNDOpWS8fWpiWKyk_9XjfSXnmoOGijaMc9qT9EkDGRkOn2-1FOm4ySvHbzaOH23V9kUf/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_19NetMother.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhim9YhUYarRUbeZnEdsCgP1YzPGLZ3g8SXEbfV2YA7x8CEj7txnq8_vBUjSfMg8ER-se8Ry2mmaNDOpWS8fWpiWKyk_9XjfSXnmoOGijaMc9qT9EkDGRkOn2-1FOm4ySvHbzaOH23V9kUf/s400/LabradorMangrove_19NetMother.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131969635499723858" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUyYkEt9dq992gYz2W6ziNN9zteLSqVTyomRMRo_tlV_Ug-yfoYE2J5L5elXpFTiw-RgmfdCq__TVal7jmD5KG8T76Xn0TZw6GI5qM9xAlUWSADtG6I4c4O7kp8tmSyNUfpyL13NDfM1XM/s1600-h/LabradorMangrove_17NetMother.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUyYkEt9dq992gYz2W6ziNN9zteLSqVTyomRMRo_tlV_Ug-yfoYE2J5L5elXpFTiw-RgmfdCq__TVal7jmD5KG8T76Xn0TZw6GI5qM9xAlUWSADtG6I4c4O7kp8tmSyNUfpyL13NDfM1XM/s400/LabradorMangrove_17NetMother.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131969515240639554" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Careless or reckless fishermen who do not take adequate care of their nets cause more biodiversity loss by not disposing of the nets properly.<br />The Govt should put in place restrictions on the use of such nets...or just plain ban the nets ... like chewing gum.<br /><br />A little into the mangrove, one can see vertical long wooden sticks placed at opposite ends of the mangrove channel. Minor) at the mouth of the mangrove estuary just in front of the Club. These looked very healthy. I could not see any Enhalus or Thalassia. Maybe a search further along the rocky shore below the magnificient bungalow may reveal other seagrass varieties. The back mangrove may also surprise us with Halophila beccarii as it is found close to mangrove areas (as in Sg. Buloh). [That would be an interesting find as even Seagrass Watch Australia were surprised by it when they saw it in Singapore.] I decided that the deeper part of the mangrove should best be tackled with an emergency pull-me-out friend just in case I got irretrievably stuck and the tide started to come in. I'd also have to duck the misguided gold balls as they flew into the mangrove from the golf course. The mud banks of the mangrove looked really sticky and chewy and I certainly do not want to get stuck in that alone without a backup plan. Another adventure for another day.<br /><br />See :<br />i. <a href="http://www.wildsingapore.com/chekjawa/text/g002.htm">http://www.wildsingapore.com/chekjawa/text/g002.htm</a><br /><br />ii. <a href="http://teamseagrass.blogspot.com/">http://teamseagrass.blogspot.com/</a><br /><br />iii. <a href="http://www.seagrasswatch.org/">http://www.seagrasswatch.org</a><br />for more info on seagrass.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-40655590608226969832007-11-11T08:10:00.000-08:002007-11-11T08:29:13.276-08:00Marine Litter at Labrador 1Here's a short clip on marine litter seen floating in at Labrador Park on 11Nov2007.<br />The only natural thing was a coconut. It's actually feather-light as it fills itself up with seawater to give it some shape. If one were to try to pick it up, it deflates itself by expelling all the water out. You can see the feeding tentacles around it's mouth which are very active as can be seen from the video clip. Synaptic Cucumbers like this one are smooth skinned and lack obvious tube feet. Most other sea cucumbers appear hairy because of their tube feet. Sea cucumbers generally feed on detritus...either deposited on/within the substrate or suspended in the water. Sea Cucumbers are generally poisonous (not venomous) except for those few species which are sold for food.<br /><br /><object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zLk4EIjUMgs&rel=1&border=0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zLk4EIjUMgs&rel=1&border=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-36514779902115129842007-11-01T08:15:00.000-07:002007-11-02T07:46:55.478-07:00Team Seagrass @ Cyrene 26Oct2007a very short (and somewhat incomplete) primer on seagrassing...showing the all important 50m tape measure, quadrat, nice people with soggy feet collecting data, hydrophobic Enhalus seagrass male flowers (the white styrofoam looking bits) floating on the water and the seagrass meadow at sundown.<br /><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hyQKzRamO8Q"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hyQKzRamO8Q" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="350" width="425"></embed> </object><br /><br />had to take precious leave for this rare cyrene trip...well worth it as usual!<br /><br />Look at the other blogs (lots of cool photos) about the seagrass session at Cyrene :-<br /><a href="http://teamseagrass.blogspot.com/2007/10/cyrene-reef-26-oct-07.html">http://teamseagrass.blogspot.com/2007/10/cyrene-reef-26-oct-07.html</a><br /><a href="http://budak.blogs.com/the_annotated_budak/2007/10/blue-on-cyrene.html">http://budak.blogs.com/the_annotated_budak/2007/10/blue-on-cyrene.html</a><br /><a href="http://tidechaser.blogspot.com/2007/10/back-to-cyrene.html">http://tidechaser.blogspot.com/2007/10/back-to-cyrene.html</a><br /><a href="http://wondercreation.blogspot.com/2007/11/lush-seagrass-meadow-of-cyrene-reef.html">http://wondercreation.blogspot.com/2007/11/lush-seagrass-meadow-of-cyrene-reef.html</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-6673962588182292182007-11-01T06:37:00.000-07:002007-11-02T08:04:44.340-07:00a Changi octopus encounter30 Oct 07 - Managed to catch a low tide at Changi after going back early from work for a change.<br /><br />Also met with Mr & Mrs L... (who i met briefly with their kids at Labrador before I spotted the Nemo). Nice to see them exploring the intertidal and occasionally hearing excited exclamations when various specimens were seen.<br /><br />Was plodding around stirring up the mud when my brother shouted out "eh squid...er...no Octopus!". (This being the last day of exams, the nieces had been invited along too and along came the parents as well.) True enough, there was a fist sized red octopus hunting in the seagrass/algae shallows. Lovely! all were enthralled by a real live wild octopus crawling around just a few feet away. Strange but this red octopus did not change colour or skin pattern during the few minutes we observed it. The video shows the octopus feeling around and causing a crab near a large sand dollar to flee in a flash.<br /><br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwgJgioE21fKo36c3_nc05Fu1wwcm5Fa0c_OZch2LLMFNezgPD302qIQMHVvx-BcJLCzPDCiux9nW2-h1P0Dg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br /><br /><object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/obobG_q9YwE"> </param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/obobG_q9YwE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed> </object><br />(testing out youtube vs blogger video)<br /><br />Unfortunately, the 'biodiversity challengers' were out too. All prepared with dark phua-chu-kang boots. The seemed to be looking for hermit crabs and fan shells. The group looked like two skinny workers taking instructions from a rather plump male boss.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0BxV2cRDQuHOwsjZLidm8aJ2yfR_wt4cg4Gbf-X6pMBKo4hIbBd860pRJaYJ_0_MrcYWm-b9UOGsey9FhFIu5Sv3Pf0Zg1K_QmvRsHDHTphbPlpdZ_A5DYNjEnnCyXA83S9l_7hcGAk_/s1600-h/changi30Oct07man+in+boots.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 104px; height: 157px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0BxV2cRDQuHOwsjZLidm8aJ2yfR_wt4cg4Gbf-X6pMBKo4hIbBd860pRJaYJ_0_MrcYWm-b9UOGsey9FhFIu5Sv3Pf0Zg1K_QmvRsHDHTphbPlpdZ_A5DYNjEnnCyXA83S9l_7hcGAk_/s400/changi30Oct07man+in+boots.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127873616128791346" border="0" /></a><br />A lady waited at the high tide mark with fishing gear but only she wasn't preparing any fishing equipment. Maybe the group was looking for bait. Funny kind of bait they were intending to use. And funny time to fish from the high tide mark when it was a really low tide. Were they there for something else?<br /><br />Also saw the 2 resident Aero2000 trucks parked at the carpark as usual as if the drivers lived at the beach. It was overturned and rather heavy. It seemed to have been broken off from it's base. As you can see, it was also covered up with lots of sediment.<br /><br />Guess that dredging is taking it's toll...or maybe the sedimentation is a seasonal thing?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-29401759891278010162007-10-15T08:54:00.000-07:002007-10-15T09:03:39.451-07:00little knobby sea star @ labradorWas at labrador on Saturday 13Oct when I noticed that it was a low tide. Despite not having proper footwear, I walked on careful not to step into the deeper puddles.<br /><br />I almost missed this little red knobby sitting quietly in a small pool. It looked like it was some sort of gingerbread knobby. The knobs were still faint red and had not turned the darker brown/black commonly seen in the larger specimens.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjISSgXxqal8s91QvLGa17x5pJtkZMSxTUc__BILDArYcqFQJYBOOJjqDjft47t7bPBlvgW1eatG11cv29ZxhFDTrwoExalZSrOhatMv4DAD1uE0IE6mOG6bbg9KnALqbeIBWmkAIis5aKR/s1600-h/IMGA0066knobby.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjISSgXxqal8s91QvLGa17x5pJtkZMSxTUc__BILDArYcqFQJYBOOJjqDjft47t7bPBlvgW1eatG11cv29ZxhFDTrwoExalZSrOhatMv4DAD1uE0IE6mOG6bbg9KnALqbeIBWmkAIis5aKR/s400/IMGA0066knobby.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121593739758346722" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1244306529838863032.post-4833532447132904982007-10-15T07:37:00.000-07:002007-11-01T07:19:54.725-07:00Nemo dat Labrador<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://blogactionday.org/"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px;" src="http://blogactionday.org/images/action_468x60.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><p>Went down to Labrador on Sunday for a look to see what might be still there.</p> <p>Was happy to see a family of four wading around in booties exploring the shore. I went over to the wall of steel to see what was going on at that corner of the planet. It was all rubbish...literally....and loads of seaweed stuck on the fence. The sedimentation was really bad with huge areas covered in a sticky clay like mud.</p> <p>As darkness fell, everyone left and I was alone on the beach. A 1.5m monitor made some noise as it scrambled up the landslide sheeting. The evening looked like a poor show until I came across this big colourful clown. It was a total surprise to see him so close to the shore.</p> <p>Enjoy : )</p><br /><br /><embed style="width: 400px; height: 326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=3609666191156464436&hl=en" flashvars=""></embed>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4
